Description

Made of 100% pure Japanese Cedar, the panels of the Japanese Folding Screen, also known as the Byoubu is a mysterious work of art due to it being connected despite not having any nails in it. The artwork is attached onto the wood with starch after an underlayer is applied and the hinges of the Byoubu are made entirely out of Japanese Washi Paper. All materials used in the production of the Byoubu are of the finest grade and is put together by exceptionally skilled craftsmen.

History

This Japanese Folding Screen, otherwise known as the Byoubu is the work of Tokyo's very first Byoubu-making shop; established in 1946. The Byoubu was originally made and used to shield one from wind currents, as well as a canvas to store paintings and artworks but it has now evolved into a form of interior decoration as well. An example of this would be from the traditional Japanese festival celebrations such as the Hina-matsuri and the Boys' Festival; where families would display dolls or Kabuto helmets in front of the Byoubu to further bring out its beauty. The most commonly used Byoubu is the plain Gold Byoubu due to the traditional belief that gold was an auspicious color and was capable of warding evil spirits. This was also said to be the reason why Gold Folding Screens began appearing in traditional Japanese-styled weddings as well.

The Byoubu also comes in many other designs aside from the Gold; a prime example would be the Colored Gold Leaf Byoubu. Primarily used in Kimonos, the use of Gold Leaf Coatings have now spread further and is now available on the Byoubu as well. Made with a mix of Japanese Washi Paper or pure silk to accentuate the beautiful artwork ranging from Japanese Pines and Sakura to Phoenixes on it, we hope that you would be able to enjoy its beauty as much as possible as well.
