Miyakonojo longbow "都城大弓" is made from bamboo and wax tree that grew in warm climate of Miyakonojo. Layers after layers is put together to make a single bow. Over 200 process is required to finish one bow, and it is traditionally done by one craftman from the beginning to the finish by hand.

This longbow shows its elegance and beauty not only in its sleek looks but in its ability to shoot arrow.

Thinking about the sound their bow would make when shooting the arrow, bowmakers works at the land under the Kirishima mountain.


Miyakonojo City "都城市" is located at south-western part of Miyagi prefecture. At the foot of great Kirishima mountains, the city has warm climate and fertile land. In the Heian period it prospered under as a privately owned, tax-free shoen "荘園" field. Miyakono city is also a birthplace of Shimazu "島津" clan, ruler of Satsuma-han who ultimately ended the Edo period along with Tyoshu-han.

People of the Satsuma-han said to kept the spirit of Kamakura period samurai; Martial art practice was common even in peaceful Edo period. Naturally, production of weapon was also popular, especially the longbow of Miyakonojo city was famed all over Japan since early Edo period.

The longbow making tradition still remain today, as it produces over 90% of its famous bow made from bamboo. It is recognized as a National tradional crafts in 1994 by Japanese government. Currently, 10 craftsmen are registered as a Dento-kogeishi "伝統工芸師": traditional craftsmen.

Delivery Time:
