The History of Brush Making in Kumano Town, Hiroshima

Kumano Town is a plateau basin that is located at about 220 meters above sea level and surrounded by mountains. Approximately 180 years ago, in an effort to promote arts and crafts in the domain of Hiroshima, villigers began learning the art of brush making. With much effort and hardship, brush making took root in Kumano and became a new industry.
This fine skill and tradition has been handed down over generations and Kumano now produces over 80% of the calligraphy, Japanese painting, painting and cosmetic brushes in Japan. Kumano brushes are widely used in Europe, America and other countries. Approximately 1,500 of the villigers are experts in a brush making technique known as "fudeshi". 18 of them are acknowlegded as "fude meisters" by the Japanese government and make special order items for calligraphy artists and are well known across the country.
